Be Quiet, Blend In

Exploration in use of installation and colour as devices to extend the architectural still life

Sally and Alex have co-occupied a studio for two years. The intention is not to draw out forced connections & contrasts between 2 artists working in different mediums, but rather highlight existing associations such as shared architectural space, emotional investment and anecdotal exchange. Here, each practice quietly leans on each other.

Be Quiet, Blend In alludes to various narratives, conventions and associations inherent (though sometimes obscured) in objects, colour and space. It makes use of installation and colour as devices to extend the architectural still life, embodied memory and pictorial landscape to include shared linguistic and personal symbolic spaces. It is also an attempt to move between two fields of investigation and question the capacity of objects to both hold and construct meaning.Alexandra Standen and Sally Anderson have co-occupied a studio for the past two years. The intricacies of this shared arrangement offered an opportunity to test the intersections (both unconscious and deliberate) of work produced in common proximity generating coincidental meanings.Be Quiet, Blend In intends not to draw out forced connections and contrasts between two artists working in different mediums, but rather highlight existing associations such as shared architectural space, emotional investment and anecdotal exchange. But instead of pointing purely to commonality and difference, Alexandra and Sally use modes of display as a playful device to extend meaning: within the picture-frame, space becomes both particular and metaphoric while at the same time the frame becomes a shelf, the objects become a frame. Here, each practice quietly leans on each other.
