Collectors' Space

Explore museum quality artworks never seen together in public before… or ever again.

The Collectors’ Space, an annual exhibition that celebrates private art collections, partners with BresicWhitney in 2016 to present an exhibition at an unoccupied inner city house. The space, announced only weeks before the exhibition, will exhibit works from the collections of Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Courtney Gibson, Danny Goldberg, and Jasper Knight. The domestic setting of the Collectors’ Space, will provide a commonplace context not normally associated with an public exhibition of contemporary art.

Sally Dan-Cuthbert
Sally Dan-Cuthbert has been an art specialist for over 28 years, working for The Blaxland Gallery, Christie’s Auctioneers and for the past 22 years for herself as a fine art consultant. Her clients range from private to large institutions, including Goldman Sachs where the collection was launched by Liz Ann McGregor. Her personal collection has been the source of inspiration for many of her clients, providing Jonathan Jones his first commissions which went on to inspire the inclusion of Jones’ work in public and museum collections. Sally’s collection features work by leading established artists including Janet Laurence, Susan Norrie, Bronwyn Oliver and John Firth-Smith, as well as newer artists, Emily Floyd, Justine Varga and Todd McMillan.  Sally’s practice is highly respected with particular importance placed on marrying the artwork with its environment. This often means working closely with artist, architect and designer to ensure the perfect combination.

Courtney Gibson
Courtney Gibson is the CEO of Screen NSW and has a background as a senior executive in commissioning and producing TV programs. Her collection includes work by Joan Ross, John A. Douglas, Rosaleen Norton, Liam Benson, Tom Polo, Christine Dean, Jane Tipuamantumiri, Mark Hetherington, Rosie Deacon. Simon Gende, Elaine Campaner, Elvis Richardson and Reg Lynch.

Danny Goldberg
Danny Goldberg has been collecting art for many years. About 5 years ago, he decided to change the focus of his collection from predominantly Australian works to one which comprised almost exclusively of international art. His motivation for doing this did not reflect a view of the relative quality of Australian art, but rather a desire to enable Australians to see international contemporary art to a greater extent than is currently on offer.
All works in his collection are available for any museum in Australia to exhibit and works have been lent to the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the MCA ,Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and Artspace . Many works have also been exhibited internationally including the Venice Biennale 2013 and 2015, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Royal Academy of Arts, the New Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg.
Currently, a touring exhibition, “Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection” is making its way through 9 regional galleries around Australia. It is anticipated that a follow up traveling exhibition of works by European artists from his collection will open in February 2017.
Danny has also sponsored a residency at Artspace which will bring one international artist each year to Sydney. The artist in residence for 2016 is Katherine Bernhardt.

Jasper Knight
Jasper Knight is a preeminent Australian artist who has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize from 2005-07, and again in 2009, 2010 and 2013. He runs 2 galleries, Chalk Horse in Sydney and Future Perfect in Singapore. He has an extensive collection that he has acquired through not only buying but swapping. His collection boasts over 300 works of leading Australian artists.
