Laura Jones - Artist Talk

Laura Jones talks about her current fascination with Australian native flowers, during her exhibition of still lives.

Laura’s still-lives are contemporary and expressive, a painter who uses gestural fluid brushstrokes to capture the sculptural shapes of gum nuts and flannel flowers.

“Although we hold a nostalgic attachment to the European flowers that have been with us since early white settlement, we claim the wildflower when we want to identify ourselves as Australian, they are expressions of our Australian-ness, a tool to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the world.

Wildflowers are loved in Australia and we clutch on to them as symbols of who we are and who we could be. Examples are everywhere; whether it's the 'Big Bad Banksia Men' from May Gibbs' Gumnut Baby novels, or the NSW Waratahs rugby team, the wildflower is engrained into our nation's culture.

Wildflower - She is a metaphor for who we could be as a society, a symbol of our unique environment, a motif for strength and femininity. This show is a dedication to her.”
