Redfern Biennale 2016

One year later, it is on again, the REDFERN BIENNALE, 2016

For the third consecutive year the REDFERN BIENNALE will be staged along Walker Street, Redfern.

We invite you to view readymades, sculpture, multi media, new media, painting, found object, anything and everything placed along Walker Street, Redfern between Cooper and Redfern Streets.

The Redfern Biennale, attracting the work of 50 practicing artists and Housing Commission artgroups, is an outdoor, eclectic, democratic free-for-all happening, that will just happen on the day.  There is no Council approval; we are just placing the work on the streets for seven hours, rain, hail or shine.

American artist Mike Kelley inspired the notion of the Biennale as his cacophonous, disorientating agglomerations and sprawling installations of stuff heaped upon other stuff, was described by art critic Jerry Saltz in the Village Voice 2005, as a pioneering example of ‘clusterfuck aesthetics’.

In the recent ARTLINK article on Australian biennales, writer Ian Millis jostles the Redfern Biennale in amongst them all, stating it breaks the model creating engagement with the local community and has ‘…limited audiences and resources, something seen as a feature rather than a failing … an occasion to rethink community, not mass entertainment’.

Some come along to one of Sydney’s premiere clusterf*** events of the year … before Disney buys us out.

Date: 19 March
Time: 11 am - 6 pm
